Another Week, Another Debate
Could the Rangers pursue former Blueshirts this offseason?

Many players have made prominent returns to Broadway: Alexei Kovalev, Petr Nedved, and perhaps most notably, Mark Messier.

While the impending offseason doesn't boast much top-tier former Ranger talent, there are a few names worth mentioning.

Here's the debate: Which, if any, of these former Ranger defensemen would be worth re-signing?

1. Paul Mara - Became a fan and locker room favorite, but not a favorite of Head Coach John Tortorella. The Rangers need a steadying force on defense and his impact on Marc Staal was significant.

2. Kim Jonsson - Perhaps a better player playing on a bad Ranger team. The lanky defenseman can play quality minutes, but isn't necessarily a strong two-way player.

3. Derek Morris - A flash in the pan for the Rangers as a trade deadline deal in 2009, but New York did consider re-signing the veteran defenseman with the big shot.

4. Jason Strudwick - The Rangers needed a 6th/7th defenseman and they got that when the acquired Anders Erikkson. Strudwick, a two-time Ranger already, was well liked and was a good veteran presence.

5. Mike Mottau - A Ranger draft choice that simply never made the cut. Could play in the third pairing, perhaps second depending on what choices the Rangers make this offseason.

Let's leave the list at five for now.

Get debatin'!

none of the above..spice up Redden and trade him say with sanguenetti for kommiserek and a 2nd rounder. let Roszy go say to the Kings for Colton Truebert and a draft pick. now our D for next year so the D looks like this

Staal and Potter
Del Zotto and Girardi
McDonagh and Kommiserek
and Gilroy as the 7th D

Draft day draft either Derek Forbort or John Merril which we can get in the latter part of the Draft giving us a trade down option if Forbort is gone

No way Burke will trade us Kommiserik and a 2nd for a bust and Redden. Burkie builds his teams defense first. Turns out niether Redden or Bobby provide that. Burke would hang up the phone laughing. And why would LA trade a first rounder and a pick to us for Rozi? They are both completely overpaid and redden is essentially useless. Not only would we have to pay redden's salary to send him to another team but we wouldn't even get a bag of pucks and a couple of concession workers for him. Rozi has slightly more value but won't net much in the trade market. late rounder and a long shot prospect at best.

As per the actual debate. Mara hasn't played since January on the 8th seed. Jonsson can't play defense we have enough of that already, Morris thinks he is better than he is and will want more money than i would be willing to offer. Strudwick... meh wasn't bad as a 7th d-man the first 2 times. If we demote Redden and trade Rozi; might be worth the pick up for league minimum. Mottau well he is an x-devil and they never seem to work out, more of a stay at home guy opposed to what we thought when we drafted him. once again short term less (2 at most) than 1 mil a year wouldn't be the worse choice this team has made in recent years.

From all the reports i have heard (1 or 2) McDonagh isn't planning on signing with the Rangers this offseason making him a UFA next year. I wouldn't bother penciling him on the depth chart just yet.

Until the trade for Pheneuf at that price I would have agreed, now anything is possible. They have 3 of these type D-men in Pheneuf, Kommiserek and Exelby, they need offensive minded D-men..Sangs will provide that and if we eat say 1/2 of his salary similar to the Avery contract, why not..you can add a later draft pick from us that 2nd rounder has to come back this way from Toronto...Kommiserek by the way has a big contract as well..so there is value here in that we need a bruising D-man and they need a O-minded D-man

Posted by: Leatherneckinlv | May 6, 2010 at 10:59 am

You're forgetting the Kommiserek > redden + Bobby in any equation. why would Toronto trade a better defensemen for 2 inferior defensemen when they already have too many defensemen to begin with? If anything they will be dealing d-men for forwards not defensemen.

Toronto won't eat Redden's contract for us without taking a first rounder, (for that matter niether will anyone else in the league). Kommiserek is a burke type player he won't be moved, well not for a reasonable price anyways.

Kaberle and a 4th for Sangs, Redden and 1st is possible. but once again i have to stand by the idea that they already have 8 serviceable defensemen and 3 offensive minded ones in Beauchemin, Kaberle and Phanuef. So they won't be looking to add more d-men and definitely not ones that actually weaken their core.

What about Valentenko or Baranka (KHL) or our own Michael Sauer at Hartford?

OK can we please put to rest the nonsense that McDonagh plans on becoming a UFA next season? I find it almost comical that people who would not know who McDonagh is unless he got introduced to him are writing stuff about him and claiming it is what is going to happen.

Meanwhile those who actually follow him, who actually see him play and who actually cover him all season long whether it is myself or any of the legit Wisconsin writers or bloggers know that this is totally not the case.

Man if that story had any truth to it then the real coverage of McDonagh would have reported it.

Try this one on for size; McDonagh who is a 2 time member of the WCHA All-Academic team is thisclose to earning his degree just might be returning to Wisconsin to finish his education and not other motive.

Cut McDonagh some slack as I know the idea in today's world about a college kid actually finishing college is rate but McDonagh is NOT your average kid.

I would know I only cover him all season long.

Looks like Sather loaded his drawers again like the baby loser he is. He cannot assemble a good hockey team that can win I cannot understand IT. It has been horrible being a rangers fan in recent years nobody from Dolan to Sather give one ioda about the die hard fans. They only worry about making the 1st round of the playoffs because after the regular season the nhl pays the salaries. A nother thing is how come all these stars come to brodway and suck then we ship them to other teams and they are phenominal it blows it really does. The garden sells out regardless because all those corporate as@#o#es take there clients to the games who dont know jack about hockey. I just want to see a consistent team that has heart and soul and wants to win not this Sather Dolan bu#@$hi$. Fans stand up with me it is time to step up to this bag of jeR@ o#$s. Dolan please sell the team please. Fire Sather.

Sanguinetti is not a bust. I do want a defensive, physical dman who makes less than 2 million dollars a year and can play the opposite side of Gilroy. A player who will play on a one year deal. We wont see McD this year and this would be a nice stopgap move. I dont know who that guy is but that is the type we need to go after. Sather should be patient as the players signed on the first week of July are all overpaid. Would I like Plekanec on this team, yes, I think he would mesh well with Gabby but the way he is playing in this playoff, someone will overpay. I just hope its not Sather. I dont see another first line center. Marleau would not be a good fit as he is a great scoring winger but a mediocre playmaking center. He needs this type of Center to create and feed him the puck. Pass on Marleau. Id pass on all of the above
