- Interesting day on the waiver wire. The Rangers placed both Todd White and Tim
Kennedy on waivers today, though John Tortorella says he expects both to be at
practice tomorrow. White is unlikely to
be claimed because of his substantial salary cap hit, but somebody might snatch
Kennedy. His tiny contract, youth and
potential make him a very attractive candidate. GM Glen Sather said he didn’t place the duo on the waiver wire with the
intent of losing them, but the cap space cleared by the move would enable the
Rangers to pick someone up, say a lefty-defenseman, if the right one was waived
by another team tomorrow. Kennedy
started training camp very strong but when players like Brian Boyle and Derek
Stepan stepped up, he became expendable. Sather said neither would be sent to Hartford if they cleared waivers. So really, it’s a strategic ploy in case
someone irresistible, and a little pricey, hits the wire but the Rangers have
no desire to lose White and Kennedy for no reason. Then again, they won’t be too shaken up if it
does happen.
- The Islanders claimed former first-round-pick Michael
Grabner off waivers from Florida. Grabner came over to Florida in the Keith Ballard deal at June’s
draft. I was very impressed when I saw
him during last year’s playoffs for the Canucks, but apparently he was awful at
training camp. Must have been, if he
couldn’t make the Panthers. Still,
wouldn’t have minded seeing the Rangers take a shot on him to see how he
developed at Hartford. Alas, the Islanders had a higher waiver
priority. Still, Grabner is someone to
keep an eye on.
