RANGERS VS. CAPITALS, 7 P.M. AT VERIZON CENTER, WASHINGTON D.C.

RECORDS:

RANGERS: 2 - 1 - 0

CAPITALS: 2 - 0 - 1

The last memories of the 2008 - 09 season revolve around a disappointing Game 7 loss in Washington marking the first time the Rangers have led a series 3 - 1 and lost.

Now, with a retooled and more offensively-minded team, the Rangers will seek revenge as they return to D.C. tonight coming off a stellar 3 - 2 victory in New Jersey on Monday.

The lineup will be much of the same as Sean Avery is still unable to skate. He expects a return Sunday at the Garden against the Anaheim Ducks.

Washington is coming off a thrilling 6 - 5 OT loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.

Alex Ovechkin leads the team with five goals and four assists in three games leading many to ponder whether he can make a run at Wayne Gretzky's single season goal record of 92.

While that is a long way off, Ovechkin has elevated himself to the most potent scorer in the NHL.

Niklas Backstrom and Alex Semin are also a threat, as they have recorded eight and seven points thus far, respectively.

The scoring power for the Capitals doesn't just rest with the offense. Norris Trophy candidate Mike Green leads a fast moving blueline that includes Milan Jurcina, Shaone Morrisonn, and former Ranger Tom Poti.

One question with the Capitals is with their goaltending.

Last season, rookie Simeon Varlamov stole the show from veteran Jose Theodore. Head Coach Bruce Boudreau has used both goalies, but Varlamov still appears to be the stronger candidate.

Varlamov is most likely to start tonight.

For the Rangers, Henrik Lundqvist will likely make his fourth start this season.

Stay tuned for line combinations and any other notes prior to the start of the game.
