Reports from MLive.com indicate that Jaromir Jagr’s agent, Petr
Svoboda, has contacted Detroit, Pittsburgh,
Montreal and
the Rangers regarding his client’s future. It had long been assumed that Jagr, 39, would return to the KHL, but
negotiations with SKA St. Petersburg have broken down and Jagr is now only
considering one Russian team, Avangard Omsk, where he has played the last three
seasons. Jagr’s top choice in the NHL is
said to be the Red Wings, but it’s unknown if the interest is mutual. Pittsburgh has
already denied interest in Jagr, but there hasn’t been a whole lot of news one
way or the other out of Montreal.
The Edmonton Journal’s Peter Adler spoke with Jagr and Adler
believes that Jagr isn’t currently worried about where he’s playing next year. Adler reports that Jagr is instead focused on
the Czech team, Kladno, of which he is a 70-percent owner. Jagr basically told Adler that there’s a lot
to be done in the offseason with Kladno and that’s his No. 1 priority right
now.
That Jagr’s agent and the Rangers have indeed been in
contact is the most significant indication yet that a return to Broadway is a
possibility, albeit a remote one. The
belief was that Jagr wanted his future resolved sooner than later, but Adler’s
report contradicts that. Still, it
appears that the chances of Jagr returning to North
America are growing.
