Why The Rangers Could Be Worse Next Year

Can we expect the same level of play from Mike Sauer and Ryan McDonagh?

Can we expect the same level of play from Mike Sauer and Ryan McDonagh?

After witnessing multiple encouraging signs last year and landing the summer’s best free agent, many are expecting the Rangers to take the next step towards Stanley Cup contention in 2011-2012.

There are lots of reasons to believe the team is on the upswing, but there is also the possibility that some of what we saw last year was a mirage and the Blueshirts might not live up to expectations.

Here are five reasons the Rangers could be worse next season:

We can’t expect that kind of performance from Henrik Lundqvist again.  The 29-year-old Swedish netminder turned in arguably his best season yet for the Blueshirts a year ago, but his statistics were buoyed by a league-high 11 shutouts.  The addition of backup goalie Marty Biron was supposed to limit Lundqvist’s workload, but Biron’s injury caused Lundqvist to make 31 starts to close out the year, the fifth consecutive season Lundqvist made at least 68 starts.  Lundqvist is among the NHL’s elite, but at some point he’s probably due for an off-year and the constant over-working could catch up with him.

The young defense may have overachieved.  It’s hard to find flaws with Marc Staal’s defensive game, but it could be argued that the rest of his compadres played over their heads last season.  Dan Girardi led the league in blocked shots, but he’d never previously approached the consistently dominant level of play he turned in last year.  Mike Sauer stepped into the lineup in November and looked like a 10-year veteran and Ryan McDonagh was quickly assimilated into the team’s second defensive pair in January.  Both rookies didn’t struggle with the growing pains that many young players do and could endure sophomore slumps.  Steve Eminger could be the team’s seventh defenseman, but for a journeyman he too played well above expectations for much of last season.  It’s hard to know what to expect from Michael Del Zotto and Tim Erixon, but the defensive core seems to have more questions than answers.

Abnormalities: Early-season clutch goals and a 12-6-0 record in the second game of back-to-backs.  The team’s constant refusal to give up in games resulted in a host of comebacks early in the season that granted the Rangers several more points than they may have deserved.  Hard workers tend to catch good breaks, but the Blueshirts haven’t been a great team when trailing in recent years and as enjoyable as the team’s never say die attitude was at the start of last season, it might not be fair to expect the same this year.  The Blueshirts will only play 14 back-to-backs this year, but it will be very difficult for them to match their inexplicable success in the second game of back-to-backs a year ago. New York was nearly impossible to beat on the back-end of a two-game in two-day set last season and that was again a tribute to the hard work of the Blueshirts and coaching by John Tortorella.  The team’s record in back-to-backs was so much better than the league norm that we should probably expect a return to the mean.

Unprecedented shootout success.  Whether by design or not, the Rangers paired one of the best shootout goalies in the league with a veritable shootout all-star squad of forwards.  Henrik Lundqvist long ago established himself as one of the NHL’s best breakaway stoppers and the lineup of Erik Christensen, Wojtek Wolski and Mats Zuccarello gave the Rangers a virtual murderer’s row of dekers.  The problem?  None of those three are guaranteed to make the team this year and though Brad Richards might be a solid fill-in, it will be next to impossible for the Blueshirts to match their 9-3 shootout record of a year ago.  The nine extra points gained in the shootout were the difference between a playoff berth and elimination last year, so their importance can’t be overstated.

Injuries.  The team’s constant collective effort to block shots resulted in a few costly casualties last year, but it could be much worse going forward.  Throwing oneself in front of a frozen piece of rubber flying at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour is a pretty good recipe for broken bones and if Coach John Tortorella insists on maintaining that philosophy the Rangers might lose more key players for even longer periods of time.  The team’s two best forwards, Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards, already have separate injury concerns of their own.

A difficult early-season schedule.  Thanks to the continuing construction at Madison Square Garden the Blueshirts will play four exhibition games in Europe as well as their first two regular season games before heading west for another five road games until they return to New York for seven straight at home.  If the Rangers use the extended global road trip to team-build and develop chemistry, it could be beneficial, but that’s an awfully grueling schedule loaded with lots of flyer miles.  It could be tough for the Blueshirts to get off to a good start.

Kevin, c'mon! Please! It's bad enough that so many Ranger fans are still inexplicably convinced that this team is jinxed/cursed even after Mark & Co. stared down the Ghosts of MSG in '94. And now you have to write this totally ridiculously pessimistic piece? What is wrong with you? It's like yelling "jump" to a bunch of potential leapers!? Why would I want to read this after the promising season AND terrific off-season we just had/are having? (Although clearly I did read it, but anyway...) Of course all of this could happen. And half of the Bruins could get concussions like Savard and Tim Thomas may have had a career year, never the likes of to be seen of again. And an asteroid could hit the Earth tomorrow, too! My point is you could say things like this about any team really. Why on Earth, speaking of which, would anyone - ANYONE - think Hank 's performance will drop, in his prime no less?! In fact, despite his great SO and SHO numbers, if you look back, his 1st half was not so King-like really, letting in a lot of soft, bad angle goals against even Kansas City as I recall. He finished very strong for sure, but as an entire season, he has lots to improve upon, despite how great we all know Hank already is. Now, I'm not saying some of what you brought up are not seemingly valid points, esp the collective shot-blocking, which still pisses me off and scares the bajeezus out of me. And, I put 100% of the blame on Tortorella for "instituting" that so-called expected "manly mantra" team-wide. But the other stuff? Seriously, if you'd like, I'll write a 180 degree piece that lets everyone know why we should be so incredibly optimistic for the first time in Slat's way-too-long tenure. Just gimme the pen, big boy! :)

Some of these will happen, some won't. Miss the part at the end? Why The Rangers Could Be Better is up next!

It's always important to never get too high or too low on a team, so remembering what could go wrong and what could go right should help find a happy medium.

We'll have the next piece up this weekend but if you'd like to write your rebuttal, I will definitely publish it!

What suspiciously got left out was that they shouldn't have made the playoffs to begin with last season. They needed to win the last game of the year and get a loss out of Carolina in the final game of the year, they got lucky. Those shoot out wins may have gotten us into the playoffs but our inability to win games in OT or regulation is what put us in that position.

Sure the shootout line up may not be a scary if Wolski, Zucc and Christensen aren't playing in a night but if they're better in regulation and OT for it I'll take that trade. Less shoot outs and more regulation wins is what will drive this team up the standings, not relying on a glorified skills competition. (Other team still gets a point, hard to move up the standings when your giving one away every time)

Not to mention if the past has taught us anything about the Rangers, free agents, and Slats... It never works out the way we think. Fingers crossed and I have all the hope in the world that Richards is different but... History tends to repeat itself an awful lot when the Rangers are involved.

Posted by: kwill | August 3, 2011 at 03:54 pm

I wonder what the general feeling of the nay-sayers, would've been had Richards been obtained via trade at the deadline, as opposed to signing as a free agent.

It's a superstition that appears logical on a whim, but when you use reason, in my mind there's significantly more reason to believe the Rangers will be a better team on the whole, (barring cataclysmic injury).

You can almost say it FEELS like they're a better team (caps-lock had to do for italics), if that makes sense. I think we can expect the group of young players to get better, AS A UNIT, a concept I've fail to see mentioned by anyone - the team-first mentality- is I think what ultimately resulted in the success we saw last year, limited as it was beyond the regular season.

Sure, you could stoke the fire by using all negative hypotheticals as the basis for an article, and then follow it up with the opposite for good measure, but neither scenario will play out;what I myself would write about or like to see written is an attempt to actually pin-point where the Rangers land, using a combination of both negatives and positives, as there most assuredly will be.

As a fan we all endure the aticles and comments that you have to write. if you didnt ask the questions than you might as well take the summer off. you need to work right. we get it. But at the same time we're fans and we always need to beleieve "this could be the year" and i do believe this is it..... if a few other pieces can be obtained. this is where i get beaten up by my fellow blueshirt bretheren. Shea Weber just was awarded a huge contract, and deservidly so. he's a monster D. someone the Rangers would love to have, and with the payroll that Nashville is able to have , he doesnt fit. what if we made them an offer of a Staal and a couple prospects to land such a prize. could you imagine Weber and Richards manning the points of the power paly for the next 5 years. Staal, Delzotto and Ryan Borque for Weber. would you do it? would Nashville? just some fodder for the dull days of August.

Seriously, your inane thesis about players overacheiving and having great years so can't expect is absurd. Girardi has been as solid as Staal except for two months 2 years ago. He has been solid as a rock. And on top of that his offensive game is starting to bloom with many assists from the point. Regarding the rookie defensemen, to state they will have soph slumps because they assimilated so well is also absurd as generally speaking 2nd year players play better as they understand the NHL game better and they now know what to expect and they learn the players better. Del Zotto failed because he is an OFFENSIVE defenseman and he tried to do too much and the defensemen around the league knew that he loved the long breakout pass and baited him into bad passes consistantly. Our young guys are tough and defensive minded. They will get better not worse.

Too state that players that are maturing and playing better wont continue because it is an anomaly is silly. I guess Steve Stamkos who many called a bust because he didn't have a good rookie year is a good example. I guess as he learned the game and had a great secong year that it wouldn't continue because he never showed it before.

In summation I would like to say to you.... I have no problem with negative articles and/or opinions but please have something substantial to back it up not just stuff pulled out of the air to try to be a contrarian. I expect much more from this publication and from you.

stamkos is a lot better than any rookie or young guy the rangers have. apples and zebras not even oranges

Posted by: LI Joe | August 5, 2011 at 09:34 pm

LI Joe, while you're almost certainly right, they do play the games for a reason. Perhaps in a few years, a guy like Thomas or Kreider steps in and scores 40+ goals..? And maybe in that time Stamkos falls back down to earth. Selective memory, methinks. Stamkos barely scored through the final 1/3 of the regular season he didn't really get going until the 2nd round of the playoffs.

When your sample size is just a few seasons, you shouldn't be making a comparison based on shoddy samples.

jeff l - you can;t seriously think any home groan ranger is n the same strasophere as stamkos
