The Rangers have announced the signing of 27-year-old forward Andre Deveaux.

The native of the Bahamas stands 6-4, 232 lbs and spent last season with the Chicago Wolves where he registered 23 goals, 23 assists, a minus-18 rating and a whopping 194 penalty minutes.

It doesn’t take much reading between the lines to realize that Deveaux is slated to be an enforcer for the CT Whale this season.  Deveaux was only involved in eight fights last year according to HockeyFights.com, but he has a long reputation of being a fearsome pugilist so his presence alone should keep opponents from taking liberties with his teammates.  As Adam Rotter notes over at SNYRangersBlog.com, Deveaux was suspended for three games in February after throwing a roll of tape at a fan.

Deveaux did post offensive totals well beyond his previous career highs in 2010-2011, so on top of his protector duties he should provide some decent offensive punch for a Whale team that looks prepared for a big season.

Deveaux played in 22 NHL games for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 and netted just one assist to go with 75 penalty minutes.

Unlike Brendan Bell, who could actually see time in New York this year, Deveaux is destined to remain planted in the minor leagues.

Deveaux was originally drafted in the sixth round by the Montreal Canadiens in 2002.
