Bulletin Board: Jody Shelley Delivers First Controversial Hit of 2011 Season

Jody Shelley

Jody Shelley

We’ll be trying a new feature on BB this season to keep you abreast of the latest developments around the National Hockey League.

Here’s a look at what’s making headlines today:

- Ex-Ranger Jody Shelley crushed Darryl Boyce of the Toronto Maple Leafs last night with a blatant hit from behind.  It’s the first of many dangerous hits that new NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan will have to deal with this year.

- Coincidentally, Shanahan sent this video to NHL players and clubs on his new role and expectations for player safety this season.

- Mike Modano, 41, retired after 21 years in the NHL.

- Fifth-overall pick Ryan Strome probably won’t make the Islanders’ NHL club this season.  Strome could be a victim of the numbers game, but the Isles will still be introducing some dazzling young talents including Swiss winger Nino Niederreiter.

- The Islanders announced that defenseman Mark Streit will be their new captain and the first Swiss captain in NHL history.  Streit missed much of last season with an injury, but he’s one of the few accomplished veterans on the team.  John Tavares was thought to be another possible option, but he’ll have to be satisfied with his new six-year, $33 million contract.

- Washington has been held back in recent years by inconsistent goaltending, but the Capitals may have solved that problem by signing Tomas Vokoun this summer.  Vokoun has been among the NHL’s elite netminders in recent years despite playing for the woeful Florida Panthers.  Vokoun is taking his new job very seriously, which could be bad news for the rest of the Eastern Conference.  Check out this quote, "I’m here not to go see history or walk around or what kind of restaurants are in town. I’m here to play hockey"

- Calgary businessman Max Chambers made a $167 million offer to buy the St. Louis Blues, but was rejected.  Blues’ ownership is reportedly seeking $190 million.

- The Hockey News lists its top-10 contenders for the Calder Trophy.  2011 second-overall pick Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche is the leading contender, but Rangers’ defenseman Tim Erixon comes in at No. 8.

- Max Pacioretty suited up last night for the Montreal Canadiens for the first time since suffering broken vertebrae and a severe concussion resulting from a Zdeno Chara hit last season.

- So much for those “Alexei Yashin is returning” rumors.  Yashin is expected to sign with CKSA of the KHL today.

- The Carolina Hurricanes gave President and General Manager Jim Rutherford a four-year contract extension today.  Rutherford is entering his 18th season as GM.  The Hurricanes have made it to the Eastern Conference finals in three of the last nine seasons and won the Stanley Cup in 2006.
