We’ll be trying a new Monday-Friday feature on BB this season to keep you
abreast of the latest developments around the National Hockey League.
Here’s a look at what’s making headlines today:
- Check out this hockey
commercial from Finland.
- Ex-Ranger Vinny Prospal is skating on
a line with Jeff Carter and Rick Nash in Columbus this preseason. Vinny should be a pretty good fit as a
playmaker on that line if he can keep up.
- New NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan handed out his first
punishments yesterday in a pretty creative, transparent way. Shanahan suspended Pierre-Luc
Letourneau-Leblond for
the remainder of the preseason and one preseason game and gave Jody Shelley
a
10-game suspension (five preseason, five regular season). Shanahan revealed the punishments using this video and this
one, where he utilized some fancy technology to explain exactly how and why
each player was punished.
- Sharks backup goalie Antero Niittymaki will have back
surgery that will keep him out for
about the next 12 weeks. Starter Antti
Niemi has also missed time during training camp after having a cyst removed,
but he
should be good to go for opening night.
- TSN’s Bob McKenzie released his preseason top-10 rankings for
the 2012 NHL Draft.
- 2011 second-overall pick Gabriel Landeskog, a popular Calder
Trophy pick, recorded
seven hits in his preseason debut for the Colorado Avalanche.
- The Penguins might need Evgeni Malkin to have a big year
with Sidney Crosby’s status uncertain. Check out Malkin’s
goal last night against the Red Wings.
- Here we go again: a task force has proposed
a $346.5 million renovation for Nassau Coliseum and the surrounding area.
- The Dallas Stars are inching closer to financial stability and
all
signs point to Tom Gaglardi being the next owner of the franchise.
- Bodog released its team-by-team
odds to win the 2012 Stanley Cup. Vancouver and Washington are the heavy favorites at 7/1 odds. The Rangers are 30/1.
- Perhaps the biggest story of the day regards an unfortunate
incident from last night’s Flyers’ game, where a
fan threw a banana at Wayne Simmonds.
