What the critics are saying:

SNY Rangers Blog: “So the Rangers won’t be involved in one of those cases of smuggling a Russian player over to the US. Damn, I love those. Still taking Pashnin is a good move, the later rounds are made for taking international players with potential and hoping that in a few years they come over at a time where they don’t need much more seasoning. For more information look up Lundqvist, Henrik.” (6/29/09)

Beyond the Blueshirts: New York Rangers Director of Player Personnel Gordie Clark on Pashnin: “We’re glad that Pashnin is in our system. We know that he was the first pick in the KHL draft. That became a deciding factor in our selection. Why so low? Unfortunately, the risk that Russians will want to make a career in the KHL is still great. We still hope that Pashnin will play for the Rangers.  But we didn’t want to take too great a risk.  What if all of a sudden CSKA offers him more money and the guy stays in the KHL?” (6/28/09)

Russian Prospects: “Pashnin is an interesting defenseman that broke out in the 08-09 season, where he played in the WJC and was the first overall pick in the first-in-history KHL draft. Despite these good premises he remains a long shot towards the NHL for two reasons. The first is his not big size, which can hurt him in the more demanding NA style, and the second is his overall level of play. Being not a specialist nor a special talent, he seems to lack that extra gear required to European players in order to have a successful NHL career. But a lot can change in the next 2-3 years.”  (2009)

Andrew Gross: “Pashin was clearly the most visible player on the ice, showing himself to be a very physical player, throwing his body around and also obviously having fun with it. He rode his stick like a broom after scoring on the penalty shot and celebrated Red’s win by leaping into his teammates arms. Of course, not everybody was amused. Werek went after Pashnin and dropped the gloves after Pashnin checked him from behind, then cursed at him as he was pulled away. That, of course, is somewhat futile since Pashnin does not speak a word of English, though the specific curse Werek was using seems, to me at least, to be pretty universal. And McIlrath, after talking about how much he enjoyed being paired with McDonagh, pointedly did not comment when asked about Pashnin’s game.

Pashnin, the Rangers’ seventh-round pick in 2009, had one goal, four assists and 52 penalty minutes in 44 games with CSKA Moscow last season and has one more season remaining on his KHL contract so he will not be at the Rangers’ training camp. But Pashnin said, thanks to Grachev’s translating, that he does want to come to North America to play. And, no, he said he does not remember watching Darius Kasparitis nor does he pattern his game after the ex-Rangers pest.” 2010 Prospect Camp (6/29/10)

Hockey's Future: “History: 2008-09: A native of Chelyabinsk, Pashnin grew up in the Mechel system and debuted with the main team in the 06-07 season, but he didn't break out until the 08-09 season, when he was surprisingly called to the national junior team first for the ADT Canada/Russia challenge, then for the WJC, in which he played an rather important role. He was also the first overall pick in the first-ever KHL Draft. Pashnin will spend the 09-10 season with CSKA Moscow.

Talent Analysis: Pashnin is a two-way defenseman who has a nasty streak. With a good hockey IQ and vision, he can create plays, however, Pashnin needs to improve his shot to be successful in the NHL.”

Hockey's Future: (Ranked 18th of top 20 Ranger prospects) “Mikhail Pashnin participated in the Rangers development camp last summer and was impressive in that brief appearance. A solid defensive defenseman, Pashnin was drafted first overall in the initial KHL draft. However, the Rangers were aware of the fact that Pashnin had interest in playing in North America. Although Pashnin has played for CSKA Moscow for the past two seasons, whether or not he will return to play in the KHL next season is currently uncertain.” (3/23/11)

Hockey's Future: KHL Season Preview : “After a couple of difficult seasons, CSKA Moscow could finally return to contention status this year because of a solid roster built by GM and former Stanley Cup champion Sergei Nemchinov. The blue line will host also Mikhail Pashnin (NYR), who did want to report to the Rangers, but was advised to stay in Russia for another season to further develop his game.” (9/13/11)
