Bulletin Board: Early Goalie Controversy In Washington?

The Washington Capitals signed Tomas Vokoun this summer, but Michal Neuvirth started their season-opener

The Washington Capitals signed Tomas Vokoun this summer, but Michal Neuvirth started their season-opener

The Bulletin Board keeps you abreast of the latest news around the NHL Monday-Friday.

- Surprisingly, Michal Neuvirth, not Tomas Vokoun, started the Capitals’ first game in net.  Washington made perhaps the most important signing of the summer when the Capitals swiped Vokoun from Florida, but Neuvirth had a terrific preseason while Vokoun struggled.  Vokoun is still the starter, but Neuvirth gave up three goals on Saturday and looked strong so if Vokoun gets off to a rough start things could get interesting.  Vokoun is scheduled to start tonight.

- Former Ranger Vinny Prospal had a goal and an assist in his debut for the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night.  Prospal is skating on a line with Rick Nash and Jeff Carter and if he can stay healthy, he could put up big numbers.

- The Winnipeg Jets were trounced 5-1 in their return to the NHL yesterday.  Do you know Justin Timberlake’s hit song “Sexy Back?”  Well here’s a parody: “We Got The Jets Back.”

- Last week the Montreal Canadiens claimed Blair Betts off waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers, but Betts was returned to Philly after Montreal discovered that he isn’t healthy enough to play.

- Recently signed defenseman Chris Campoli is expected to be out for months for Montreal.  The Canadiens lost depth defenseman Jeff Woywitka on waivers to the Rangers last week and he would likely have been the guy to step into the lineup.

- 2011 first-overall choice Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored the game-tying goal that sent Edmonton and Pittsburgh to overtime last night.  RNH’s first goal came in his first game and he doesn’t appear likely to return to junior hockey.  Edmonton went on to win in a shootout, snapping the Penguins’ seven-game shootout win streak.

- 2011 Calder Trophy winner Jeff Skinner picked up right where he left off, scoring Carolina’s first goal of the season eight minutes into Friday’s tilt against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

- The Phoenix Coyotes aren’t shying away from the difficulties they face in a non-traditional hockey market.  The Coyotes’ marketing campaign for the season, entitled “Hockey The Hard Way,” is worth checking out.

- Minnesota’s Pierre Marc-Bouchard was suspended for two games for high-sticking Columbus’s Matt Calvert in the face.  PMB is appealing the suspension as it appears that Calvert tried to lift his stick and inflicted the damage upon himself.

- Mathieu Perrault, not sophomore Marcus Johansson, is centering Washington’s second line to start the season.

- The Colorado Avalanche traded defenseman Kyle Cumiskey to the Anaheim Ducks for Jake Newton and a 2013 seventh-round pick.

- Former Rangers’ prospect Roman Horak – traded for Tim Erixon – recorded an assist in his first NHL game.

- Pittsburgh has already played three games, so it’s no surprise the Penguins lead the NHL with 10 goals scored.  Ottawa has already given up 11 goals through two games.  The Philadelphia Flyers may have finally found their goalie – Ilya Bryzgalov has given up just one goal in two games.

- Phil Kessel and Anze Kopitar are both off to fast starts – each has three goals.
