The Bulletin Board keeps you abreast of the latest news
around the NHL Monday-Friday.
- On Saturday, Vancouver and Florida completed the first
big trade of the season. The Canucks
sent Mikael Samuelsson and Marco Sturm to the Panthers for David Booth, Steve
Reinprecht and a third-round pick. Booth, 26, has been a 30-goal scorer but injuries have derailed his
career. If Booth returns to form, he
could become a terrific wing for Ryan Kesler on Vancouver’s second line. Florida is an extremely young team with
plenty of cap space, so why the Panthers made this move is puzzling. Perhaps the team feels that Booth will never
be the same, but at just 26-years-old it may have been too early to give up on
him. Both Samuelsson and Sturm have expiring
contracts, so perhaps Florida is hoping to make a big run at one of next summer’s
free agents, but the Panthers have never been a popular free agent destination.
- Yesterday Phoenix traded Petteri
Nokelainen and Garrett Stafford to Montreal for Brock Trotter and a seventh-round
pick.
- Washington crushed Detroit 7-1 on Saturday night and is the
team to beat in the NHL right now. The
Red Wings had yielded
seven goals in their previous five games before the Capitals destroyed
them.
- The Columbus Blue Jackets were in line to pick up their first
win of the season on Saturday when they led the Ottawa Senators 3-2 with under
a minute left in regulation. But in true
Columbus fashion, the Jackets allowed
two goals in 31 seconds to blow the game and drop to 0-7-1 on the season.
- Los Angeles goalie Jonathan Quick picked
up his third consecutive shutout on Saturday and hasn’t allowed a goal in
his last 188:10 of action. Quick has
given up just five goals in six games this season.
- Check out this
save by Phoenix goalie Mike Smith on Anaheim’s Bobby Ryan.
- New Jersey Devils’ center Jacob Josefson suffered a broken clavicle
and will miss
the next three-to-four months. The
Devils’ recalled
Adam Henrique from Albany to replace him.
- Pittsburgh defenseman Zbynek Michalek will miss
the next month of action with a broken finger.
- Montreal center Scott Gomez will
miss a week with an upper-body injury.
- Joe Thornton played in his 1,000th career game on Friday.
- Nicklas Lidstrom played his 1,500th
career game on Saturday.
- The Winnipeg Jets reassigned 2011 first-round pick Mark Scheifele to the
Barrie Colts of the OHL. Scheifele
was dynamic in the preseason but needs a bit more time to mature physically.
- Check out this list
of NHL stars that haven’t scored yet this season. Ryan Getzlaf net his first two goals of the year
last night.
- There are two other games on the schedule
tonight beside New York @ Winnipeg. The surprising Maple Leafs will look to continue their early season run
against Philadelphia and the hapless Canadiens will play host to the new-look
Florida Panthers.
