Bulletin Board: The Blues Are 4-0-1 Under Ken Hitchcock

Ken Hitchcock has turned things around in St. Louis in a hurry

Ken Hitchcock has turned things around in St. Louis in a hurry

The Bulletin Board keeps you abreast of the latest news around the NHL Monday-Friday.

- St. Louis is now 4-0-1 under new Coach Ken Hitchcock.  The Blues haven’t allowed a goal in the second or third period since Hitchcock took control.  All five of those games were played at home, but perhaps a coaching change was all the Blues needed.  Hitchcock has a goaltending controversy on his hands, though.  Brian Elliott has been sensational this season, but the expected starter, Jaroslav Halak, has rebounded after a slow start and has allowed just five goals in his last four games.

- Pekka Rinne made 38 saves as Nashville beat Toronto 4-1.  Martin Erat scored twice and Sergei Kostitsyn added three assists.  The Maple Leafs have lost five out of six. Nashville’s Brian McGrattan and Toronto’s Jay Rosehill engaged in the fight of the year during the contest.  Nashville forward Craig Smith blew an opportunity for an empty net goal at the end of the game.

- Boston beat Columbus in a shootout and has now matched the Rangers with a seven-game winning streak.  The 2-1 shootout loss marked the 13th straight loss on home ice for the Blue Jackets.

- Rookie Matt Read scored with 18.6 seconds left to propel Philadelphia to a 2-1 win over Phoenix.  Ilya Bryzgalov shined in making 30 saves against his old team.   Jaromir Jagr suffered a groin injury during the victory.

- Detroit recalled prized prospect Brendan Smith in time for last night’s game against San Jose.  Smith was a minus-2 in 19:18 in the Red Wings’ 5-1 loss.  San Jose defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic registered a goal and three assists and was a plus-4 in the victory.  Pavel Datsyuk says he’s been “awful” this season.

- The New York Islanders, who had lost 10 of their last 11, snapped a four-game losing streak with last night’s 4-3 win over Montreal.   Jay Pandolfo scored the 100th goal of his career in the victory.

- Los Angeles blew a two-goal lead in the final minutes but held on to beat the floundering Ducks 5-3.  Anaheim has lost 12 of its last 14 games.  Mike Richards scored twice for the Kings.

- Tampa Bay won its sixth consecutive game on home ice over Pittsburgh 4-1.  Vincent Lecavalier scored twice for the Lightning.

- Niklas Backstrom shutout the Colorado Avalanche with 27 saves.  Minnesota has won eight of its last 10.

- Evander Kane scored twice to help Winnipeg upset Washington 4-1.

- Rumors flew Thursday evening that Wayne Gretzky had been approached by MLSE to become a purchasing partner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, but Gretzky’s agent denied the report.

- There were also plenty of rumors last night that Columbus forward Jeff Carter had requested a trade.  Carter has missed most of the season with a fractured foot but by all accounts he was devastated when the Flyers sent him to the Blue Jackets last spring.  Columbus’s early struggles can’t be making things easier and while it’s doubtful that Carter formally requested a trade, he’d surely love to find a new home.

- Contract negotiations between Ryan Suter and Nashville are progressing and Suter confidently stated “it’s going to get done.”

- Retired forward Mark Recchi had no love lost for Vancouver when his Bruins played them in the Stanley Cup Finals last spring.  “[In] 22 years they are the most arrogant team I played against and the most hated team I’ve ever played against,” Recchi said.

- The Quebec government declined to press criminal charges against Zdeno Chara for his hit on Max Pacioretty last spring.

- Chicago demoted former first-round pick Rotislav Olesz to the AHL

- There are three games on the schedule tonight.  No particularly great matchups, but keep an eye on Buffalo @ Carolina.  If the Hurricanes lose, the team may make a move.
