So the media can go right ahead and say whatever they want
about game 5 between the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings as it won’t
matter to me. See when I sit down in front of the TV for game 5 I am going to
dare to dream that on Sunday there will be a game 6 at Madison Square Garden.
If the Rangers win then great this series will explode over
a game 6 but if the Rangers do lose then I will be OK with that as well. As
much as I hate to lose there will be plenty of positives to come away from the
2013-2014 New York Ranger team.
So go ahead and make a party out of game 5 wherever you are
at watching the game. Celebrate that the Rangers who started out looking like
crap worked their way to the finals in spite of all the naysayers. Enjoy that
the team eliminated 3 teams that for years were the causes of heartbreak for
Celebrate the coming out party from Ryan McDonagh, Mats
Zuccarello and Cam Talbot this season. If they don’t win this year there is a
core group that will no longer be aiming to earn the 8th seed in the
playoffs and happy to just make the playoffs.
Salute the team for overcoming so much and yet still finding
ways to succeed. Enjoy that for a change there is a coach who learns from his
mistakes and improves his own creations. Give the franchise credit for bringing
up several top prospects and running them through an extra training camp while
they watch and learn what it takes to win at the NHL level.
Dare to dream that the Rangers will take a step and bring
back another game on Sunday. While others may go around saying that the Rangers
are toast, remember that New York is the home of the miracles. Remember Super
Bowl 3, the Miracle Mets, Dave Stallworth and the Knicks slaying the giant name
Wilt, the Giants knocking off the New England Patriots not once but twice in
the Super Bowl.
Yes remember the days of Reggie Jackson hitting 3 home runs
on 3 pitches to knock off another team from Los Angeles, the 1986 New York Mets
being down to their last out in the World Series in game 6 trailing by 2 and
their comeback to force a game 7. And don’t forget that the Mets were down 3-0
in game 7 and won that one.
Then there was this team in 1994 that was down 3-2 to New
Jersey and some guy named Messier made a guarantee. Yes see why it is OK to
dream about what is supposed to be the impossible as you never know.
Oh and there was one last New York miracle which happened in
1980 in upstate New York which asked the most important of questions:
Do you believe in miracles?
Yes I do.
