So the other night I was on Twitter and I found myself in an
exchange with someone who was almost in a panic because Glen Sather had not
made any moves publically. Now I hope the guy was just screwing with me but
truth be told, he was not the first person who was already on the case of the
New York Rangers because they haven’t announced any moves.
Which leaves the question “why the rush to make moves?” as
really the 2013-2014 season has barely ended and to be honest the Rangers are
way ahead of themselves in shaping the 2014-2015 roster. You haven’t forgotten
that Sather has already addressed what would have been the 3 key issues facing
the team in this year’s off-season have you?
Sather has Henrik Lundqvist and Ryan McDonagh already signed
to long term contract extensions and he dealt with the status of Ryan Callahan with
the Marty St. Louis trade. Sather has also signed 3 of last year’s draft class
to their entry level contracts as well as adding 3 NCAA free agents along with
Calle Andersson and another European free agent.
How about letting Sather catch his breath as he and the rest
of the Ranger management team work on this week’s draft, the required decisions
on who does/doesn’t get qualifying offers and which unrestricted free agents do
the Rangers want to try and keep/let go. They also have been organizing the
Prospect/Rookie Camp which starts on Monday.
Oh and in case you have forgotten the Rangers have been
working on all this while the team was still playing something. Of course if
you would prefer that the Rangers have the normal 6 weeks of golf time that
they have had the previous 19 years to make all this happen then how about we
all take a deep breath and enjoy what will be the shortest off-season in 20
Why are so many so impatient is what I really have to ask? Seriously
at times Ranger fans want things done yesterday and forget that patience can be
a virtue. If you really stop and think about it then you are not realizing that
when the Rangers open training camp for the 2014-2015 season that most of the
roster spots will already be spoken for.
Yes they have to replace Brad Richards, very possibly Anton
Stralman and Brian Boyle, and maybe Beniot Pouliot and Dom Moore. Not going to
say that the first 3 players play important roles but we are forgetting that
until last season the Rangers were turning over 8-12 players depending on the
People are forgetting that waiting in the wings for their
chance to make the roster are J. T. Miller, Jesper Fast, Oscar Lindberg, Conor
Allen and Dylan McIlrath. I don’t know about the rest of you but I really like
the idea of looking forward to a training camp as the Eastern Conference
Champions, as legit cup contenders and having so few question marks.
There are better days ahead for the New York Rangers so sit
back, enjoy the upcoming summer and for a change trust that they will get the
job done. But if you really want to panic please give me warning so I can run
