The North American New York Ranger prospects are slowly getting their regular seasons underway with two in action on Friday. Neither defenseman Nico Gross or forward Riley Hughes saw their teams come away with wins.

In Kingston Gross who was the Rangers 2018 fourth-round pick and his Oshawa Generals opened their season with a 5-2 road loss to the Kingston Frontenacs. Gross was scoreless on a quiet night for him. But that according to those who follow the OHL appears to be the norm for Gross.

The young Swiss defender according to Dobber Prospects is a defense-first defender. The Generals are hoping that they can get some offense from Gross who 4-10-14 in 58 games last season.

Riley Hughes and his Victoria Grizzlies were taking part in BCHL Showcase the last couple of days. Sadly it wasn’t much of a showcase for the Grizzlies as they dropped both games. On Thursday Riley Hughes had Victoria’s only goal as they lost to Merritt 2-1. For Hughes, it was his third goal of the season as he is 3-1-4 in five games so far.

On Friday, Hughes was scoreless as the Grizzlies were spanked 5-2 by the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. The Grizzlies have been struggling with consistency as they fell to 2-3 on the season.

Thursday saw Joey Keane be returned to the Barrie Colts by the Rangers and Keane made it back in time to play in the Colts home opener. Keane would earn his first point of the season with a secondary assist as the Colts whipped the Owen Sound Attack 9-2. Keane was a +3 on two shots and a minor for slashing.
