Prospect Park: Riley Hughes Earns First Star With Two Goal Effort

Just two New York Ranger prospects in action on Sunday as Riley Hughes continues his strong play. Hughes scored twice but his Victoria Grizzlies needed the shootout to take a 6-5 win over the Vernon Vipers. Hughes has eight goals in his last six games helping Victoria to six wins in their last seven games.

The Rangers 2018 seventh-round pick scored the first of his goals with an even-strength goal at 1:29 of the second period. That goal made the score 3-0 in favor of Victoria but the Grizzlies could not hold the lead.

In the third period with the score tied at 4-4, Hughes would put the Grizzlies up 5-4 with a second even-strength goal at 7:14. Veron would tie the game and force overtime where neither team would score and the game went to the shootout. Hughes was not used in the shootout but would be named the game’s first star for his second star in three games.

Hughes after this game is now 14-13-27 in 26 games. He leads the Grizzlies in goals (ninth in BCHL), fourth in points (20th overall in BCHL) and is second in BCHL rookie scoring, Hughes will be under consideration for BCHL player of the week after going 4-1-5 in three games.

Nico Gross was scoreless as his Oshawa Generals would need overtime before earning a 4-3 win over the Niagara IceDogs. Gross was a -1 on one shot with minors for elbowing and cross-checking. His Generals earned their third straight win.
