The Sunday Rangers Prospect Report

In Prospect Park by Jess Rubenstein

With only three games on the schedule, Sunday was a rather quiet day for the New York Ranger prospects. Only Cristoval Nieves (2012 second) and his Michigan Wolverines saw victory for their efforts on Sunday. Michigan which is ranked 11th in the current USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine College Hockey poll earned a 3-2 win over Mercyhurst to sweep the weekend series and start their season with a 2-0 record.

Nieves was scoreless on three shots and a +1 which is an improvement over Friday’s one shot. Really want to see Nieves taking at least four to five shots a night to increase his offensive output. Michigan will head head east for games against Union College and RPI next weekend.

Sergey Zborovskiy (2015 fourth) was held scoreless on two shots while taking a slashing minor as his Regina Pats dropped a 3-1 decision to the Calgary Hitmen. Zbororvskiy’s minor ended a streak of five games without a penalty for the young Russian defender but the penalty did lead to a Calgary power play goal. Zborovskiy is 3-3-6 with 12 PIMs in 10 games this season.

Ryan Mantha (2014 fourth) was also scoreless on two shots and a minor penalty only his was a roughing minor as his Niagara IceDogs dropped a 4-3 decision to the North Bay Battalion. At least in Mantha’s case, his minor did not result in a power play goal. Mantha is 1-1-2 with 14 PIMS in nine games as the IceDogs fall to 3-6-1 on the season.
